Summary of the Championships

Time flies – it feels as though we’ve only just started the Championships, and yet they’re already over.

And so much really did happen over those three days:

• We began with a seminar for competitors. Six experienced paramedics presented topics to the Championship participants relating to difficult airways, hypothermia, the treatment of injuries – including spinal injuries – mass casualty incident management, and cooperation with the HEMS.
• The official opening featured a presentation of the teams and an unforgettable concert by young musicians from the band SOS at the Youth Palace in Olsztyn – the rock hits were so well received that the band had to play an encore 😊
• The first task, ‘12 groszy’ – a test featuring questions from various fields of medicine delivered at a rapid pace, requiring concentration and quick thinking.
• Night-time tasks – first, the ‘Nim wstanie dzień’ challenge, involving providing first aid to a person rescued from a fire, who, in addition to severe burns to the skin and airways, had suffered a deep wound caused by a section of the building collapsing; followed by ‘Miałem 8 lat, gdy usłyszał o mnie świat’ – treating a child with von Willebrand disease who’d had an accident on a scooter.
• Daytime tasks – there were six of them, each requiring knowledge, experience, quick decision-making and effective communication:
  • ‘Na zakręcie’ – a road traffic accident, with a casualty suffering from abdominal and spinal injuries,
  • “Dziwny jest ten świat” – providing assistance to two divers, one of whom had suffered a heart attack and the other required resuscitation,
  • ‘Jesteś lekiem na całe zło’ – neurological disorders and developing anaphylactic shock in a patient at an aesthetic medicine clinic,
  • ‘To co czujesz, to co wiesz’ – a car wash customer fainting, who was found to be suffering from cardiogenic shock,
  • ‘Zegarmistrz światła’ – managing a woman following a suicide attempt, where establishing a rapport and communicating with her and her hard-of-hearing husband was just as important as the medical treatment,
  • ‘Szczęśliwej drogi, już czas’ – a fitness challenge in which paramedics took on the role of soldiers, completing an obstacle course against the clock, carrying a heavy casualty and performing medical procedures.
• Friday’s children’s feast – a safety and first-aid feast was held at Olsztyn-Dajtki Airport as part of the Championships. Around 600 children from schools in Olsztyn and the surrounding area took part. They had the chance to learn how to administer first aid, find out about the work of the emergency services, road safety rules… and much more! The festival was accompanied by performances by children from the Youth Palace in Olsztyn.
• Ambulance parade – a convoy of nearly 60 ambulances, led by the police, drove through the streets of Olsztyn with sirens blaring, heading for Olsztyn-Dajtki Airport.
• Awards ceremony and closing of the Championships – upon the parade’s arrival at the airport, a formal presentation of trophies and prizes took place, recognising winners in individual events, the best international team and, of course, the winning teams in the overall classification. The team from Bielsko-Biała were crowned Polish Champions, with the team from Mielec taking second place and the team from Katowice coming third. The best foreign team was the team representing KAGES & Med Uni Graz from Austria. Congratulations to all!

The Championships in figures:

• 47 Polish teams competing in the overall classification,
• 8 foreign teams (Great Britain, Slovakia, Estonia, Hungary, Cyprus, Greece, Ukraine and Austria),
• 6 lectures during the seminar,
• 9 tasks,
• 49 subject judges,
• 87 role-players and technical judges.

Our gratitude goes to you, the task authors – the scenarios and assessment sheets are the result of your experience and knowledge, as well as the many hours spent in substantive discussions.

We would like to extend our warmest thanks to the subject-matter judges, technical judges, role-players and officers. It is thanks to your hard work and dedication that we were able to carry out all the tasks. This involved not only several hours at your stations, but also, in many cases, days of preparation to ensure the scenarios were as repeatable and realistic as possible.

A huge thank you to all the institutions, services, companies and individuals who, through their personal and material support, made it possible to hold the simulation, the feast and the ceremonies, and who supported us organisationally at many stages.
